HOFH Elite Care Center Spotlight: Jaywalker Lodge

By: HOFH

Situated in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado is a drug and alcohol treatment center offering a clinically sophisticated 12-step immersion program for motivated men. The treatment center’s name, Jaywalker Lodge, is inspired by page 37 of the book, Alcoholics Anonymous. The Jaywalker is the person with a tendency to relapse in the past despite an honest desire to recover. In recognizing the difficulties that individuals face in life after treatment, the continuum of care at Jaywalker Lodge emphasizes the importance of community and long-term recovery through a unique combination of five programs.

One Year, Four Impactful Programs

The four programs at Jaywalker Lodge are designed to support up to full 12-months of recovery within different levels of care.

1. The Landing - This is the first phase of treatment for most new clients. The program lasts between 3-21 days and introduces clients to the accountability and opportunity that extended care offers. The focus is on developing an individualized treatment plan, community integration, as well as recreation, and comprehensive clinical assignments.

2. The Lodge - The 90-day program is the core of the extended care program at Jaywalker Lodge. It provides an immersed, structured, peer-driven community for men in recovery with a combination of a rigorous clinical curriculum and a variety of mountain-based activities. The environment at The Lodge is non-restrictive with an equal amount of clinical treatment and experiential treatment through activities like skiing, mountain climbing, fishing, and rock climbing. One of the goals is to have fun in recovery and gain a deeper understanding of the self in different settings.

3. Solutions - The next phase of the continuum of care is Solutions, which is a transitional 90-day program for residents who are ready and able to assume personal responsibility. Here, clients implement a sober lifestyle that mirrors independent living. In addition to continuing to work the 12-steps, clients will participate in a vocational or academic track and have the opportunity to connect with others through meaningful and purposeful service experiences.

4. Outpatient and Sober Living - In the Jaywalker outpatient program, clients are provided real-life solutions through a combination of education, therapy, and group activities. The fully-licensed 90-day program consists of two evening group therapy sessions and one individual therapy session per week along with family case management services that are designed to meet their specific needs. The Jaywalker Outpatient Program is also coupled with our own sober living adjacent to our Carbondale campus.

5. Upon successful completion of Jaywalker’s programs, clients are eligible to enroll in The Graduate Program. Jaywalker’s most recent innovation incorporates the best practices in recovery research to maximize the upside of recovery. This program is for the client who is excelling in their recovery and wants a little more time in the Jaywalker community and consists of a weekly group therapy session, bi-weekly individual counseling, and continuing family case management and drug/alcohol screening services.

“We believe that Recovery happens in community,” says KC Gooding, Chief Marketing Officer of Jaywalker Lodge. “Jaywalker is so much more than a treatment program. It’s an unmatched life-changing experience, that creates an environment you want to be a part of. It fills the hole of being isolated in addiction with admiration, joy, and abundance, as well as identifying purpose and meaning. We’re integrating a sense of community and belonging that has been lost for so long for our clients.”

Gooding recounts a time when he worked with a young man who transitioned to Jaywalker Lodge from another 60-day program. Although he had already completed a program at a different treatment center, the young man hadn’t bought into recovery, and it was clear that he still had a lot of work to do, including in his family system. Upon entering the 90-day program at Jaywalker Lodge, he began working with a therapeutic team that specializes in men’s needs. The team also worked with his family to help establish boundaries and guide him to be more self-sufficient. What he witnessed was a complete shift in the family system dynamic, an entire family working together towards recovery together.

“Over that period of time, we saw a dramatic change in his ideals,” says Gooding. “The young man is now two years sober, in college, getting straight ‘A’s’, and is very successful in his relationships. His mom still contacts me to thank us.”

Collaborating into the Future of Athlete Care

Having served pro athletes and their family members in its programs, Jaywalker Lodge is looking forward to being a part of the solution in creating more resources for men suffering from substance abuse and mental health disorders. One of the treatment center’s goals is to not just help break the stigma around getting help but to also band together with other resources and service providers to provide support.

“Over the course of my professional career in behavioral health, I have always held the belief that we are better together,” says Gooding. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be asked to join Hall of Fame Health, which is committed to ethics in our profession. We strive to collaborate to bring success and create change for the people we are serving. It’s part of our fabric.”

“We are delighted to welcome Jaywalker Lodge as an Elite Care Center,” says Ryan Cain, President of the behavioral health program for Hall of Fame Health. “They are ideally situated in an environment that focuses on long-term healing while also incorporating

various activities like snowboarding, fishing, and hiking into its program, which can be ideal for individuals who are used to being active but also want to enjoy the space to work on their recovery. Their commitment to providing long-term recovery solutions for men who are motivated can be life-changing.”
